SNAP HISTORY

North Texas SNAP, Inc. was formed in 1999 as a non-profit organization by a group of concerned parents to address the needs of teenagers and young adults with intellectual disabilities in Northeast Tarrant County.  Intellectual disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy,   mental retardation, neurological impairment, developmental disabilities and autism.

By working together, SNAP has become a strong voice for change for its Members.  SNAP’s membership is comprised of individuals with disabilities (Members), their families (Family Members) and friends, teachers, businesses  and people in the community (Affiliated Members).

SNAP’s Members have the same hopes and dreams as their peers without disabilities.  Our Members want to have jobs, friends, relationships and decent, affordable housing.  SNAP is committed to helping these individuals live, work and play in their own community.

Originally, we, as Family Members, organized SNAP because of our sons and daughters.  SNAP has now expanded our circle to include many in Northeast Tarrant County.

It is of vital importance that the community support systems we put in place will extend into the future and be in place when Family Members are deceased.  As parents of Members with intellectual disabilities, we understand both the day-to-day struggles and the immense joys of the smallest successes in the lives of our children.  By opening doors for our sons and daughters, we open doors for scores of other individuals in our community.

We believe in building a community support system where Members with intellectual disabilities are an integral part of the community.

It is our privilege and responsibility to establish the necessary support system for our Members and have them in place now and for generations to come.
