Expanded Living Program

North Texas SNAP’s Expanded Living Program was developed in response to parents and the board’s interest in having a precursorsary program to our Project Neighbor independent living program.

It is a comprehensive, individualized program to prepare our members for the step into greater independence and responsibility. Members will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding  that will help build confidence as they work towards the goal of greater independence.

Members of SNAP must apply for the program, if accepted, the program includes:

  • An introductory seminar, interview and general assessment
  • Interactive workshops for the participants and separate workshops for their families (6 months of weekly workshops).
  • Six (6) months of one-on-one individualized training/coaching based on the participant’s specific needs. 
  • The goal of this program is to provide participants with the tools and training to live a healthier lifestyle, safely, more confidently and with greater independence.

Over 20 areas of skills and understanding are covered through small workshops, one-on-one training and life coaching.

  • Basic Food Preparation and Food Safety
  • Basic Household Skills – Making a Bed, Doing Laundry, Cleaning, Cooking 
  • Interpersonal Skills and Communication Skills
  • Decision Making Skills
  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Healthy Lifestyle Skills

This program is a one year, fee-based program that is highly structured and individualized for people with a mild or moderate intellectual and developmental disability, who wish to develop the skills and confidence to live life more independently.
